AI Knows the
Wrong OSU
Oklahoma State ranks last of five peer institutions on AI visibility while holding the second-largest audience. The authority it has built is real, but is pointed at spiders, poison ivy, and cholesterol instead of academics.
What These Numbers Mean
Five terms carry most of this report. They come from AI search measurement rather than traditional SEO, so they are worth a minute up front.
A 0 to 100 index of how present a brand is in AI assistant answers. It blends how often the brand is mentioned with how large an audience those answers reach. Higher is better. It is a relative measure, useful for comparing schools to each other, not an absolute grade.
The number of times a brand is named in AI answers across the tracked prompt set. A count of appearances, not of clicks or visits.
The estimated number of people reached by the answers containing those mentions. Big audience with few mentions means the conversations are popular but the brand is rarely the one named.
Total monthly prompt volume for a subject area, across everyone. When we say OSU owns a topic worth 6.5 million, that is the size of the conversation, not OSU traffic.
A cited page is a URL an AI answer links or refers to as its source. A prompt is one question a person asks an assistant. This audit covers 63,079 prompts and the top 10,000 cited OSU pages.
The four land-grant and regional comparators we measured OSU against: Texas Tech, Iowa State, Kansas State, and the University of Oklahoma.
Three Findings, in the Order They Matter
Select a finding to open the evidence behind it.
Like-for-like comparison across all models, United States. OSU sits at the bottom of the peer set on visibility while carrying the second-largest audience of the five.
Select an institution to highlight it across every peer table and the chart below, and to read OSU's gap against it.
| Rank | Institution | AI Visibility | Mentions | Audience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Texas Tech University | 76 | 13,070 | 203,964,538 |
| 2 | Iowa State University | 72 | 13,568 | 251,630,536 |
| 3 | Kansas State University | 71 | 9,899 | 210,838,317 |
| 4 | University of Oklahoma | 69 | 10,609 | 167,053,163 |
| 5 | Oklahoma State University | 66 | 10,389 | 225,620,422 |
Texas Tech converts a smaller audience into the highest visibility score. Audience size is not the constraint. What AI systems associate with OSU is the constraint.
Context: the mention decline is category-wide
Every institution in the peer set lost roughly half its AI mentions between March and August 2026. OSU's decline of 52% sits at the peer median, between Kansas State at 51% and Oklahoma at 48%, with Iowa State furthest down at 58%. This is a market-level contraction, not an OSU failure, and it should not be read as one.
Across the top 10,000 cited OSU pages covering 63,079 prompts, AI systems overwhelmingly cite utility subdomains. The flagship brand and recruiting site barely registers.
| Subdomain | What lives there | Share of citations |
|---|---|---|
| extension.okstate.edu | Extension fact sheets on pests, plants, health, and household questions | 47.4% |
| Library subdomains | Digital collections, archives, research guides | 23.3% |
| breeds.okstate.edu | The livestock breeds reference archive | 10.6% |
| go.okstate.edu | The flagship brand and recruiting site | 2.4% |
Extension, the libraries, and the livestock breeds archive account for 81.2% of every AI citation OSU earns. The site built to recruit students accounts for 2.4%. The most-cited individual pages are fact sheets on brown recluse spiders, poison ivy, minerals in the diet, carbohydrates, and stinging wasps.

A 45.9 Million Moat Doing Nothing for Enrollment
These are topics where OSU is the only one of the five institutions mentioned. No peer competes here. Combined monthly topic volume across the top 10 is 45,874,467. Not one is an education or enrollment topic.
This is a genuine competitive asset no peer has touched. OSU Extension has built national-scale trust on health and practical knowledge. Iowa State runs comparable Extension scale, 28,100 cited pages against OSU's 27,200, and still ranks second overall. Large Extension footprints and strong academic visibility are not mutually exclusive. OSU has the first without the second.
The brands AI mentions most inside the topic "Oklahoma State vs University of Oklahoma." Both Ohio State and the University of Oklahoma are mentioned more often than Oklahoma State in its own rivalry topic.
OSU's leading education topic is literally named "Universities and Colleges in Oklahoma and Ohio," and ohiostatebuckeyes.com ranks as a top-six source domain here. The comparison content that does exist is entirely athletic: all 10 related topics under this comparison are sports, none addressing academics, cost, or outcomes. A prospective student comparing the two gets football.
No One Has Claimed the AI Crawlers
Not one of the five institutions declares directives for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended. Not one references a sitemap in robots.txt. This is uncontested ground in a peer set of five, and claiming it is an afternoon of work.
robots.txt is a small text file at the root of a site that tells automated crawlers what they may and may not read. Declaring a directive means naming a specific crawler in that file and giving it an instruction. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended are the crawlers that feed ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers. Crawl posture is the sum of those instructions: what a site has decided to let AI systems see. Crawl hygiene is whether the file is accurate and current, or full of stale rules that block pages the site actually wants read. A sitemap is the index of every page worth crawling, and pointing robots.txt at it is the standard way to hand crawlers that list.
| Institution | Crawl Posture | AI Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Oklahoma State | Clean and permissive. Blocks only /_osu_test/ and /sandbox/ | None |
| Iowa State | Clean Drupal defaults. Blocks /admin and /search | None |
| Kansas State | Very long legacy file, extensive path blocks | None |
| University of Oklahoma | Blocks /content while pages are served from /content | None |
| Texas Tech | Empty robots.txt. No directives at all | None |
OSU has the cleanest crawl posture of the five, which means it is the best positioned to move first and the least likely to break anything doing it. One honest caveat: Texas Tech runs an empty robots.txt and still leads the peer set. Crawl hygiene alone does not drive these scores. Treat this as a cheap, uncontested advantage to take, not as the explanation for OSU's position.
Five Moves, One for Every Finding
Make the reach you already have count
OSU's answers reach 225.6 million people. OSU is just rarely the name in them. Pick the ten questions a prospective student actually asks and make go.okstate.edu the best answer to each one. That is what moves a visibility score.
Fix the homepage title and add a meta description
The flagship page runs a 25-character title, an Open Graph title repeated three times, and no meta description. Interior templates already handle all three correctly, so this is a template gap rather than a strategy problem. The wording should come from your team.
Point the Extension audience at your programs
OSU alone owns 45.9 million in monthly volume on health and practical questions. Add OSU framing and one clear next step to the most-cited fact sheets, pointing to nutrition, entomology, veterinary medicine, and public health. Iowa State runs the same Extension scale and still ranks second.
Publish the comparison students are actually looking for
Every related topic for Oklahoma State against Oklahoma is sports. Put academics, cost, and outcomes side by side, and use the full name next to OSU throughout, so the acronym resolves to Stillwater instead of Columbus.
Bonus: claim the AI crawlers
Add rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended, and point robots.txt at your sitemap. No peer has done it, and your file is the cleanest of the five to change safely.
How We Got These Numbers
Three things, run across all five institutions so the comparison is like-for-like.
| AI visibility scan | 63,079 prompts and the top 10,000 cited pages, for OSU and all four peers |
| Hand check of each site | Homepage, admissions template, and robots.txt, read directly |
| OSU organic baseline | 515,183 keywords, roughly 1.2 million monthly visits, authority score 65, 596,703 backlinks |
Let's Start With the Two You Can Fix This Quarter
The homepage title and the AI crawler posture need no new technology and no new content. Those are days of work, not quarters. The academic comparison content and the Extension pathways are where the compounding value sits, and both need a plan before they need a budget.
We would like 30 minutes with your team to walk through Finding 03 and scope the first 90 days.
